THE INTRICACY OF A BLUESIGN® PRODUCT

THE INTRICACY OF A BLUESIGN® PRODUCT

One of our ambitious Deuter Promise goals is to make 50% of our products from recycled main materials and source 70% of these from bluesign®-certified fabrics by 2025. This commitment supports resource-saving, eco-friendly production, fair working conditions, and a reduced CO2 footprint. By 2021, 19% of our collection was already bluesign® certified, marked by the Green Button symbol—a testament to our dedication, hard work, adherence to guidelines, and strong partnerships. We're proud of this achievement and the team behind it.

What does a bluesign® product mean in relation to the individual parts of a backpack?

A bluesign® product is made up of at least 90% "bluesign® Approved" fabrics and 30% "bluesign® Approved" accessories. Sounds a bit abstract, doesn’t it? To really grasp what that means, you need to consider how many components go into our backpacks. For instance, how many individual parts do you think are in our UP Seoul backpack?

143.

To achieve bluesign® status, a product must meet the stringent bluesign® standards as outlined. This involves a thorough compliance check of the various manufacturing processes for each component, including the impact on people and the environment during production. Given that these components are produced by different manufacturers using diverse methods, it's clear that a bluesign® product is a complex blend of processes and materials.

AND HOW MUCH WORK GOES INTO EVERY BACKPACK?

Creating a backpack involves much more than just assembling 143 individual parts. For example, the UP Seoul is crafted in 30 steps over 13 hours, requiring the coordinated efforts of 10 different people (not including the production of materials and transport). Each of these individuals adds value to the backpack through their skill and time, and we all share responsibility for their well-being. That's why we encourage our customers to make thoughtful purchasing decisions, invest in high-quality, durable products, and treat our items with care. In doing so, customers show the respect and appreciation that the people who made these products truly deserve.
