WHAT TO EXPECT

The Juatinga Crossing trail takes you through deserted beaches, crystal clear rivers, picturesque waterfalls and breathtaking jungle forests, making it one of the most beautiful coastal hiking trails in Brazil.

The TREK IN DETAILS

The Juatinga Eco Reserve is a peninsula that protrudes from the bay of Ilha Grande out into the sea. Covering an area of 80 km², it includes 12 Caiçara villages, 21 beaches, wide expanse of rocky shoreline, peaks in excess of 1,000 m (Pedra da Jamanta – 1,098 m and Pico Cairuçu – 1.070 m), crystal clear rivers, waterfalls and an abundance of flora and fauna typical of the Atlantic rainforest with mountains, humid deciduous forests and mangroves. It is home to a wide range of plant and animal species in an area known for its biodiversity.

The peninsula is accessed only by sea or on foot and is protected by the Cairuçu Environmental Protection Area and the Juatinga Eco Reserve – making it a small corner of paradise in the Atlantic Ocean. Aside from its natural beauty it also offers the opportunity to get to know some of the Caiçara people who are known to give hikers the warmest welcome

During the crossing of the Juatinga peninsula the walk takes you along the coast, along beaches, rivers and over hills with some steeper sections both up and down. Here, there are about 9,797 hectares of Atlantic Forest remnants with restinga forest, mangroves and rocky shores. It also covers several beaches, such as Sono, Ponta Negra, Cairuçu das Pedras, Martim de Sá, Pouso da Cajaíba, Itanema, Itaoca, Praia Grande da Cajaíba, as well as Saco do Mamanguá, Engenho, Cruzeiro, Prainha and others.

From moderate to challenging, this traverse is ideal for those looking to enjoy a trek through varied ecosystems and along incredible beaches, and to learn about the history and culture of Caiçara people. Having an adventurous spirit is a must, though.
